چکیده

UNLABELLED Sensory nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) of median nerve measured across the carpal tunnel, difference between distal sensory latencies (DSLs) of median and ulnar nerves and difference between distal motor latencies (DMLs) of median and ulnar nerves are commonly used nerve conduction parameters for diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). These are having high degree of sensitivity and specificity. Study of median nerve F-wave minimal latency (FWML) and difference between F-wave minimal latencies (FWMLs) of median and ulnar nerves have also been reported to be useful parameters for diagnosis of CTS. However, there is controversy regarding superiority of F-wave study for diagnosis of CTS. So the aim of present study was to compare sensitivity and specificity of median FWML and difference between FWMLs of median and ulnar nerves with that of above mentioned electrophysiological parameters and to find out which parameters are having more sensitivity and specificity, for early diagnosis of CTS. METHODS Median and ulnar nerves sensory and motor conduction, median and ulnar nerves F-wave studies were carried out bilaterally in 125 clinically diagnosed patients of carpal tunnel syndrome. These parameters were also studied in 45 age matched controls. RESULTS Difference between DSLs of median and ulnar nerves, median SNCV and difference between DMLs of median and ulnar nerves were having highest sensitivity and specificity while median FWML and difference between FWMLs of median and ulnar nerves was having lowest sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis of CTS. So in conclusion F-wave study is not superior parameter for diagnosis of CTS.

Sensitivity of the Median- Ulnar Motor Comparative Techniques in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

ABSTRACT Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most common entrapment syndrome. Median-ulnar motor comparative technique with Median motor technique in carpal tunnel syndrome were studied. In 50 patients with 72 hands with clinically defined carpal tunnel syndrome and electrophysilogic evidence of Median neuropathy at wrist based upon a prolonged sensory nerve distal latency with 30 asymptomatic volu...

Comparison of Ultrasound Findings of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome before and after Corticosteroid Injection

Background and Objective: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most prevalent type of peripheral neuropathy due to neural entrapment. This syndrome is primarily diagnosed based on clinical symptoms, and it is subsequently confirmed by electro-diagnostic studies. Ultrasonography as a safe, available, and inexpensive method is also valuable in the follow-up of patients. This study aimed to evaluate the ...

The Usefulness of Calculated Electrophysiological Parameters in Assessing the Severity of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common type of mononeuropathy. Although CTS patients usually have sensory and motor latency in the EMG-NCV or EDX, a significant percentage (10-25%) of patients have a normal routine study. And if more complete diagnostic tests are not performed, it will not be diagnosed. We decided to identify this group of patients by calculating other meth...

The Relationship between Nerve Conduction Studies and Electromyography Findings in Patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common neuropathy in the general population. Nerve conduction studies are among the standard methods for diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome. Electromyography is painful and unpleasant, and if nerve conduction studies can be used to diagnose axonal injury in carpal tunnel syndrome, electromyography might be replaced. Objectives: This study aimed t...

The clinical significance of the palmaris longus tendon and functional superficial flexor of the little finger in the pathophysiology of carpal tunnel syndrome

Abstract   Background: The pathophysiology of carpal tunnel syndrome is associated with   increased intracarpal canal pressure. Recently, palmaris longus has been introduced   as an independent risk factor for the development of carpal tunnel syndrome. The   purpose of this study was to assess the association of carpal tunnel syndrome with   the presence of palmaris longus tendon and function...
